Therefore, it seems self-evident that master builders could think up complex buildings and keep all the necessary details in mind.<sup data-fn=\"b72383b1-5430-4ed2-9ec9-bc22844b2b8d\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#b72383b1-5430-4ed2-9ec9-bc22844b2b8d\" id=\"b72383b1-5430-4ed2-9ec9-bc22844b2b8d-link\">1<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>I retrospekt er det forbl\u00f8ffende hvor kort forfatteren av boka utdraget over er henta fra ser ut til \u00e5 ha gl\u00f8mt nettopp det poenget. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jeg skal ikke gj\u00f8re denne bloggen til en bokanmeldelse-blogg, men en bok som har fanget uforholdsmessig mye av min oppmerksomhet i det siste f\u00e5r et unntak her. Passerbruk virker for meg (i stadig \u00f8kende grad) helt sentralt for middelalderens treskj\u00e6rerkunst. Mer detaljer om dette f\u00e5r komme senere, men der jeg tidligere trodde Borgund stavkirke gjemmer p\u00e5 en h\u00e5ndfull eller to passermerker fra da den ble bygget, viser nye unders\u00f8kelser at det nok er hundretalls bevarte spor av passerslag. Deler av ornamentikken er etter mitt skj\u00f8nn kanskje merket opp <em>utelukkende<\/em> med passer, og nok spor st\u00e5r igjen til \u00e5 ikke bare kunne si at passer var mye brukt men ogs\u00e5 noe om <em>hvor mange ulike passere<\/em> som h\u00f8rte til i verkt\u00f8ysettet og <em>egenskapene til de enkelte<\/em>. Basert p\u00e5 tekster som Theophilus\u2019 <em>Schedula diversarum artium<\/em> (ca 1120) og Cennini\u2019s <em>Il libro dell\u2019arte <\/em>(ca 1390?) er det tydelig passere hadde en sentral plass i en hver (?) kunsth\u00e5ndverkers utrustning. For \u00e5 sitere (en engelsk oversettelse av) Theophilus selv: \u00abAfter this, with compasses and a rule, measure out and dispose the designs that is figures or animals, or birds and foliage, or whatever you want to draw.\u00bb<sup data-fn=\"46144df2-fa95-4972-9d35-8691fd64d3e2\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#46144df2-fa95-4972-9d35-8691fd64d3e2\" id=\"46144df2-fa95-4972-9d35-8691fd64d3e2-link\">2<\/a><\/sup> eller \u00abdraw it on the board with a rule and compasses\u00bb<sup data-fn=\"ca0f3df4-e272-4215-9aa0-94a7371bcc32\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#ca0f3df4-e272-4215-9aa0-94a7371bcc32\" id=\"ca0f3df4-e272-4215-9aa0-94a7371bcc32-link\">3<\/a><\/sup> \u2014 uavhengig av hvorvidt motivet er gemometrisk eller floralt, planter, folk eller fe. Og n\u00e5r Theophilus senere i tredje bok oppsummerer verkt\u00f8yene som er sentrale for metallarbeid presiserer han ogs\u00e5 der: \u00abAnd there are iron compasses made in two parts; they are large and small, straight and curved.\u201d<sup data-fn=\"266b97e6-3856-4077-8ba2-489676a9d04c\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#266b97e6-3856-4077-8ba2-489676a9d04c\" id=\"266b97e6-3856-4077-8ba2-489676a9d04c-link\">4<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ulike former for \u00abopph\u00f8yet geometri\u00bb som skal ligge bakenfor fortidens byggekunst har v\u00e6rt et gjentagende tema opp gjennom litteraturhistorien. Men p\u00e5fallende (?) lite har v\u00e6rt skrevet om <em>passerbruk i praksis.<\/em> Stor var derfor entusiasmen min da jeg snubla over boka \u00abPassion for Compasses: Medieval Master Builders and their Cathedral Building Plans\u00bb<sup data-fn=\"3756f44f-86b2-4894-aeb2-0499cf0ad3a2\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#3756f44f-86b2-4894-aeb2-0499cf0ad3a2\" id=\"3756f44f-86b2-4894-aeb2-0499cf0ad3a2-link\">5<\/a><\/sup> til salgs p\u00e5 ett av internetts mange salgskanaler for slikt, og like stor ble spenninga p\u00e5 hva som skulle skjule seg mellom denne bokas permer.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tidlig i boka blir det klart at Klug som forfatter fors\u00f8ker \u00e5 stille opp en overordnet modell for \u00e5 forst\u00e5 middelalderens byggmestre og arkitekter:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-style-tw-large-icon is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Nowadays, we take it so much for granted that everyone can write and read that we give no thought to what a world without written texts might look like. Rather, we assume that oral or preliterate cultures &laquo;function&raquo; just like our culture. But the linguistic and communication research of recent decades has shown that the differences in the understanding of the world between oral \/ preliterate and literate cultures are enormous. Cultures without a [s.47 forts.] written language cannot be understood if presuppositions are imposed on them that do not apply to them. Oral and literate cultures are so fundamentally different in their way of thinking and acting that, in fact, communication between the two is indeed difficult, sometimes impossible.<sup data-fn=\"a73f989d-1bca-4c01-bc54-cafa1efa3f88\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#a73f989d-1bca-4c01-bc54-cafa1efa3f88\" id=\"a73f989d-1bca-4c01-bc54-cafa1efa3f88-link\">6<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Kanskje burde denne siste setningen v\u00e6rt en advarsel b\u00e5de til leseren og ikke minst forfatteren selv. Hun bruker relativt mange av bokas sider (ironisk, gitt hvor mye spalteplass hun ogs\u00e5 bruker p\u00e5 \u00e5 understreke den enorme kostnaden pergament og papir ville utgjort i tiden hun skriver om) p\u00e5 forskjellen mellom muntlige og skriftbaserte kulturer, og p\u00e5 \u00e5 underbygge (om enn ikke helt overbevisende) at middelalderens byggmester\/arkitekt \u2018helt sikkert\u2019 var analfabet.<sup data-fn=\"cd018fb4-6777-4ee4-8919-4ba3a6d57be3\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#cd018fb4-6777-4ee4-8919-4ba3a6d57be3\" id=\"cd018fb4-6777-4ee4-8919-4ba3a6d57be3-link\">7<\/a><\/sup> I l\u00f8pet av alle disse sidene reflekterer Klug ikke nevneverdig over at det hun beskriver som en <em>muntlig<\/em> kultur passer sv\u00e6rt godt til \u00e5 beskrive en h\u00e5ndverkskultur, og det som p\u00e5 norsk har blitt hetende \u00abhandlingsboren kunnskap\u00bb<sup data-fn=\"9dd4b955-42cb-4aa0-afbe-c66e387b9d30\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#9dd4b955-42cb-4aa0-afbe-c66e387b9d30\" id=\"9dd4b955-42cb-4aa0-afbe-c66e387b9d30-link\">8<\/a><\/sup>. Det ville v\u00e6re sv\u00e6rt uretterdig \u00e5 kritisere Klug for \u00e5 ikke kjenne til et s\u00e6rnorsk begrep p\u00e5 h\u00e5ndverkskunnskap, men hun viser heller ikke s\u00e6rlig nysgjerrighet for evnespekteret i en muntlig kultur:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-style-tw-large-icon is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>So how did medieval master builders acquire or learn their knowledge if they did not complete a scholastic-theoretical education? We must keep in mind that the transmission of knowledge in an oral or preliterate culture is fundamentally different from that in a literate culture. In an oral culture, knowledge is always experiential knowledge of action, acquired through practical doing; in literate cultures, on the other hand, it is teaching and learning knowledge, acquired through books and instruction. This means:<br>In oral cultures, people pass on their professional know-how directly by word of mouth, usually from father to son or close relatives, or from master to student or apprentice, without going through a school or training system. People learn primarily by copying and imitating.<br>In literate cultures, a school and teaching system working with teachers and texboks &#8211; i.c., knowledge in written form &#8211; (largely) replaces direct transmission. Instead of experiential knowledge of action, theoretical knowledge in written form derived from practice is passed on. Such [s. 132 forts.] knowledge is broader and deeper than purely experiential knowledge because it is based on the know-how of many different masters of a subject and not just on the knowledge of a single person, as is the case with oral transmission. The storage of knowledge on an &laquo;externalized carrier medium&raquo; such as the book means that transmission no longer depends on the personal presence of the knower.<sup data-fn=\"22300fe9-e115-4e9c-a57b-e362672cf511\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#22300fe9-e115-4e9c-a57b-e362672cf511\" id=\"22300fe9-e115-4e9c-a57b-e362672cf511-link\">9<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Om noen skulle v\u00e6re i tvil om verdien av begrep som \u00abhandlingsboren kunnskap\u00bb, og av \u00e5 l\u00f8fte fram verdiene og viten som ligger i h\u00e5ndverk, er det bare \u00e5 trekke fram ti ord fra forrige utdrag p\u00e5 nytt: \u00abSuch knowledge is broader and deeper than purely experiential knowledge\u00bb. Og det er ikke en isolert, uheldig formulering:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-style-tw-large-icon is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>The dissemination of knowledge in written media also expands the possibilities for choosing a profession. For example, in order to become a baker, merchant or builder, in a literate culture it is not necessary to have close relatives who have the necessary know-how, because it can be acquired through a school with appropriate training. However, this presupposes knowledge of script, reading and writing, as well as the existence of appropriate training institutions and learning media.<br><br>Strictly speaking, the oral transmission of knowledge cannot be called &laquo;education&raquo; in the modern sense.<sup data-fn=\"6ba6c6b0-11be-4500-9c19-3fbd501517e3\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#6ba6c6b0-11be-4500-9c19-3fbd501517e3\" id=\"6ba6c6b0-11be-4500-9c19-3fbd501517e3-link\">10<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Undertittelen p\u00e5 boka er <em>Medieval Master Builders and their Cathedral Building Plans<\/em>, men tross dette kommer hun sjelden egentlig s\u00e6rlig n\u00e6r \u00e5 diskutere selve byggetegningene. Hun har noen obligatoriske plantegninger med \u00abpassersirkler tegnet inn av forfatteren\u00bb<sup data-fn=\"3a7206c9-afe3-4fb0-a04f-1506f41d337e\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#3a7206c9-afe3-4fb0-a04f-1506f41d337e\" id=\"3a7206c9-afe3-4fb0-a04f-1506f41d337e-link\">11<\/a><\/sup>, men kommer egentlig ikke fram til <em>hvordan<\/em> arbeidet kan ha foreg\u00e5tt. \u00c9n justering som kanhende ville gjort det overordna argumentet i boka lettere \u00e5 f\u00f8lge er om bruken av begrepet \u00abconstruction plans\u00bb hadde v\u00e6rt byttet ut med \u00abscale drawings\u00bb. Etter poengene Klug gj\u00f8r gjennom boka later dette til \u00e5 v\u00e6re det hun egentlig mener<sup data-fn=\"2e7fea2f-530e-4950-bdf5-a406431fdee8\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#2e7fea2f-530e-4950-bdf5-a406431fdee8\" id=\"2e7fea2f-530e-4950-bdf5-a406431fdee8-link\">12<\/a><\/sup>, og forskjellen er kanskje ikke stor \u2013&nbsp;men den er vesentlig for argumentet. Noe konklusjon \u00e5 snakke om har boka egentlig ikke, \u00f8yensynlig ei heller redakt\u00f8r. For min del var bokas litteraturliste kanskje nyttig, og ellers var den en fin p\u00e5minnelse om \u00e9n ting forfatteren selv stadig gjentar, men tilsynelatende helt har misforst\u00e5tt selv:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-style-tw-large-icon is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>We make the mistake of imagining the oral world of thought and communication as a &laquo;variant of the literate world we know&raquo; and of believing that writing merely represents language in visible form.
